O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials before moving to Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady began her career modelling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She also guest starred in a variety of other shows and was a part of made for TV and independent films. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the squad between 1993 and the year 1996. She was nominated to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama each year. With her fellow cast members, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Outstanding Performance of the Ensemble of a Drama Series.
